What If My Kid Is Shy at Summer Camp?

How we support the shy, quiet, and unsure.
Some kids walk into new places and make friends instantly.
Others take a little more time.
If your child is the second kind, it’s natural to wonder:
Will they feel comfortable at camp?
Maybe you can picture your kid:
Walking into a cabin… and not knowing where to sit.
Standing at free time… and not knowing who to join.
Watching other kids laugh…and feeling left out.
Most parents can feel that moment.
So here’s how we support every camper starting Day One.
Cabins are small and grouped by age and gender.
Each one has two counselors whose first job isn’t rules — it’s connection.
They learn names quickly.
They run structured icebreakers.
They introduce students to one another instead of letting anyone float.
Free time isn’t a social free-for-all.
Counselors help students choose an activity — and often join them.
By dinner on the first night, most campers know a few names.
By the second day, inside jokes are forming.
Belonging at Camp Firwood isn’t accidental.
It’s intentional.
And over 70 years, we’ve seen some of the quietest campers leave with the deepest friendships.
Here’s something to wonder about:
If your child feels unsure at first, what would you hope happens next?
