Is My Kid Ready for Overnight Camp? (What Readiness Really Means)

Updated: Mar 19

Confidence usually comes after the stretch.

Almost every parent asks us at some point:

“How do I know if my kid is ready for camp?"

It's a fair question.

What We Mean When They Ask “Is My Kid Ready for Overnight Camp?”

If by “ready” we mean already confident, fully independent, and completely socially at ease… many campers aren’t there yet.

But they may be ready to grow.

One thing we’ve seen over 70 years:

A kids gaining confidence at summer camp by climbing a rock wall.

Confidence rarely comes before a student is stretched. It comes because of it.

Most campers don’t show up fully self-assured.

They arrive a little unsure.

A little nervous.

Curious… but cautious.

And that’s enough.

What Helps Kids Grow at Overnight Camp

At Camp Firwood, students choose activity classes they’re excited about, create a community in cabins with two caring counselors, and build friendships without the pressure to perform.

They don’t need to arrive fearless. Just open to trying.

A kid learning they are ready for an overnight camp by trying archery.

Here’s something to wonder about:

What might your child discover about themselves if they tried?
